Dozens of veterans and their family members came out to a pair of Memorial Day events in Vallejo on Monday morning, with a focus on those who couldn’t show up.

Ceremonies at Mare Island Naval Cemetery and behind City Hall recognized those who fought and died for the United States. Vallejo Mayor Robert McConnell, attending with City Attorney Veronica Nebb, Vice Mayor Rozzana Verder-Aliga and Councilmember Diosdado “J.R.” Matulac, said the day was about celebrating “the common man,” unlike other holidays he said commemorated specific individuals.
