Mare Island welcomes Eppleton Hall

Early next week, the 1886 3-masted, square-rigged Balclutha is tentatively scheduled to arrive

The 1914 paddlewheel tug Eppleton Hall tied up at Mare Island Tuesday — the second of five historic vessels to be towed from the National Park Service’s Hyde Street Pier in San Francisco to the former Navy shipyard that will be their new homeport for several years.

The 100-foot-long Eppleton Hall followed the 1895 lumber schooner C.A. Thayer that tied up last Friday afternoon at Mare Island after a six-hour tugboat tow from Alameda, where it had been drydocked for repairs.

There have been lengthy delays in the moves, but final preparations were recently completed on the Mare Island seawall, where the ships – comprising the largest fleet of historic vessels on the West Coast – will remain while the deteriorated Hyde Street Pier is replaced. Work on the pier has not yet started.
