“Launching a new tradition …”

Celebration of Mare Island promises to be ship-shape by Sean McCourt, Times Herald Online.

The U.S.S. Jupiter is one of several ships built at Mare Island that will be celebrated at the Spirit Ship 4th of July Celebration on Monday in Vallejo.

“If you were to visit the Mare Island Naval Shipyard around 80 years ago, it was a bustling hub of energy and activity. The installation was running at full capacity every day, building and repairing ships at a breakneck pace so they would soon be launched and setting sail across the Pacific to fight against the Axis Powers in World War II. The island is much quieter these days now that the Navy has left, but “The Spirit Ship Celebration” taking place on Monday afternoon and evening aims to pay tribute to the memory of the men and women who worked so hard for the war effort to protect the American way of life — all while celebrating the most American of holidays, the Fourth of July.” Click to read full article.
